The newest car accessory will soon be Wi-Fi. Available in early January, the technology will let passengers check email en route, surf the web, play games or communicate via any Wi-Fi-enabled device. But hold the applause! It promises to be a boon to passengers as a way to make every business moment pay or to idle away a tedious journey. The question is how much of a peril it presents for road users in general.
The California company, Autonet Mobile, presented what it describes as the era of permanent Internet connectivity in a press release in January. Its patent pending TRU Technology and new wireless service will turn any car into a WiFi Hotspot. The company is also expected to announce an agreement with a leading car rental company to offer a portable, wireless Internet service by the end of the first quarter of 2006.
